Home inspectors are not required to operate appliances such as laundry appliances; however, there are some things the inspector should be looking for.  The water supply valves to the washer should be accessible.  It is always advisable to shut the water supply off when not in use.  The dryer should be safely vented to the exterior.  For homes with the laundry in and above  living areas, a catch pan under the washer is recommended.

It is recommended that water supply valves are easily accessible and the water hoses are braided metal mesh rather than plain rubber hoses

The dryer should always be vented to the exterior of the house with the shortest run possible for the vent pipe.
